BYU Compares Porn Addiction (and Masturbating?) to War

The title says it all in this one. I hope you’ve seen this.

I used to intern at Funny Or Die, so I know a little bit about funny videos. This is not a satire. This is real-life propaganda. And let me say, it’s total bullshit.

If you’re not a little confused as to why Brigham Young University-Idaho President Kim B. Clark compares porn addiction with war, you probably have never seen porn. And you certainly have never seen war. I haven’t seen war. But I would never compare videos of two (or more) consensual people having sex – whether they are actors or amateurs – to war, which brave women and men lose their lives to each and every day.

Freedom of speech and religion are two of our greatest rights as Americans. It’s Clark’s right to make a really stupid video. I appreciate its entertainment value. But in the eternal words of NFL Hall of Famer Cris Carter, “Come on, man.”

The Idaho Statesman says a student employee in the Housing and Student Living Office produced the video several months ago. Something tells me the student didn’t come up with the concept. He or she definitely didn’t write this part of Clark’s speech (included in the video):

“A lonely, confused young man gets addicted to pornography. His roommates know, but they do nothing to help him. He stops going to church. There is darkness in is eyes. The young man is spiritually wounded on the battlefield of the great war.”

I couldn’t even copy and paste that without laughing. You have to check out the visuals, too. You’d think the student pornography user in this video was Satan’s spawn if you didn’t know any better. I guess that’s Clark’s point.

The one good message in this video is that it’s important to talk to your friends when you think they have a problem. We at The Millennial Man support that message.

The University claims that the point of this video was to encourage students to help their friends fight any type of addiction. I would say it failed mightily in conveying this message, and instead created a video that suggests masturbating means the Devil has consumed your soul. I can guarantee that is not the case… I asked a friend.

And does anyone else feel bad for the poor college kid who had to play the possessed masturbator? There’s no way people don’t identify him as a serial jerker for the next couple of years.

Mostly, we at The Millennial Man are jealous BYU-Idaho shelled out enough money to make a video with this high of a production value. If you’re looking to invest in funny, satirical videos, we’ll send you our address. But please, stop blaming a college student for propagating your administration’s agenda.
