As always, keep in mind the title “New” Music Monday is subjective because the music I suggest is pretty new to me. I hope it’s new to you, too, since that would make the title more applicable. On the other hand, if it’s not new to you, that’s not a bad thing because it’s probably some awesome tunage that has graced your life for longer than it has mine.
This week’s band suggestion is The Explorers Club.
You’ll notice right away that The Explorers Club have an old, familiar sound that they aren’t trying to hide. “Forever” sounds like a lost Beach Boys track off of Pet Sounds.
The band’s Facebook page says that they make “music today that echoes the golden era of the 60s and 70s.” They sure do. And it’s awesome. This of course is coming from a 25-year-old writer who grew up listening to the oldies station in Chicago. Man, I miss hearing Dick Biondi once in a while.
Anyway, The Explorers Club is great. The band hails from Charleston, South Carolina, but sounds like they’re from Southern California circa 1960. Their music is perfect for driving around in the middle of summer – or if anytime if you live in the south or warm west – and elicits a sense of calm and relief.
If you’re headed to the beach, daydreaming about the summer as you sit through another storm in the Midwest or on the East Coast, or having a Corona in your garage, make sure to turn on The Explorers Club. Their music would go well with some wacky tobacky, too! You didn’t hear that here if your state hasn’t legalized marijuana.
